India Joins Over 100 Nations at UN Statement Opposing Israeli Measures in West Bank
United Nations, February 19: India has joined more than 100 countries and international organisations in a joint statement at the United Nations condemning what it described as Israel’s unilateral measures aimed at expanding its presence in the West Bank.
The statement, issued by the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the UN, rejected annexation and expressed opposition to actions altering the character and status of the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem.
The signatories said such measures were contrary to international law and should be reversed, adding that they undermine ongoing efforts towards peace and stability in the region.
Earlier, 85 countries had issued a similar statement on February 17 without India’s participation. New Delhi later joined the expanded declaration supported by over 100 nations and organisations.
The statement reaffirmed support for a just and lasting peace based on relevant UN resolutions, the principle of land for peace and the two-State solution.
India has consistently maintained support for a sovereign, independent and viable State of Palestine living side by side with Israel within secure and recognised borders. India was the first non-Arab country to recognise Palestine in 1988.
