Indian Embassy advises nationals to leave Iran amid rising US tensions

New Delhi/Tehran, 23 February: The Indian Embassy in Iran on Monday issued a fresh advisory urging all Indian nationals to leave the country by available means of transport in view of the evolving security situation and rising tensions between Iran and the United States.

The advisory applies to students, pilgrims, businesspersons and tourists currently in Iran. The Embassy also requested Indian citizens to keep their travel and immigration documents, including passports and identity cards, readily accessible. Emergency helpline numbers and an official email contact have been shared for assistance.

The advisory comes amid escalating tensions following renewed diplomatic and military posturing between Washington and Tehran. US President Donald Trump indicated that he is considering potential military action if negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme do not progress. He stated that Iran should negotiate what he described as a “fair deal,” while reiterating Washington’s position on uranium enrichment.

Iran, in response, has said it is preparing a counterproposal based on what it termed “mutual respect.” Iranian officials have indicated that a formal response could be presented within the next few days. However, it remains unclear whether Tehran will agree to limits on domestic uranium enrichment, a key demand of the United States.

Meanwhile, Oman’s foreign minister has announced that US-Iran talks are scheduled to reconvene in Geneva later this week. Tehran has also reportedly conveyed its position to the United Nations, warning of strong retaliation in case of military escalation.

Regional tensions have further intensified with increased military deployments. Reports indicate that US naval forces are strengthening their presence in the region, while Iran has conducted military drills near strategic waterways. The Strait of Hormuz continues to remain a sensitive flashpoint.

In addition, fresh anti-government protests have been reported in parts of Iran, adding to domestic pressures amid the ongoing diplomatic standoff.

Indian authorities have stated that they are closely monitoring the situation and have assured assistance to nationals facing any difficulty. The Embassy has urged citizens to avoid areas of protests, remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
