Modi, Trump discuss West Asia crisis, Strait of Hormuz security
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump to discuss the escalating situation in West Asia and the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route.
According to diplomatic sources, the two leaders exchanged views on the need for de-escalation and ensuring the safety of international shipping routes amid rising tensions involving Iran.
The conversation comes after reports indicated a temporary pause in US military actions in the region and possible diplomatic engagement efforts.
Both leaders emphasised the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, as the passage accounts for a significant share of global crude oil transportation.
Prime Minister Modi is learnt to have expressed concern over the evolving situation and reiterated India’s support for peaceful and diplomatic resolution of the crisis. India is also monitoring the situation closely, including the safety of its nationals in the region.
Despite fluctuations in global oil markets due to the tensions, India’s economic position remains stable, according to officials.
The discussion reflects continuing coordination between India and the United States on issues affecting global energy security and regional stability.
