ndia Condemns Attacks on UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon, Calls for Accountability
New Delhi: India has condemned the recent attacks on United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon and called for accountability following an incident that resulted in the death of three Indonesian personnel during Israeli strikes against Hezbollah positions last month.
Speaking at the weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India strongly condemned the attacks and paid tribute to the fallen peacekeepers.
“We condemn the recent attacks on UN peacekeepers deployed in UNIFIL and pay our homage to the fallen Blue Helmets. We urge all parties to ensure the safety and security of peacekeepers and respect the sanctity of the UN mission,” he said.
Jaiswal noted that India, being one of the largest and longest-serving contributors to UN peacekeeping missions, supports accountability for crimes against peacekeepers in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2589.
He did not name any country in connection with the incident.
India also expressed concern over the safety of its own personnel deployed with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), where around 600 Indian troops are currently stationed.
Highlighting India’s role in peacekeeping, Jaiswal said Indian contingents have made significant contributions to global peace and security under UN mandates.
According to reports, Indonesia has sought a United Nations investigation into the deaths of its peacekeepers following the strikes in southern Lebanon.
