West Asia tensions rise as Iran fires missiles at Israel
New Delhi: Tensions in West Asia escalated on Tuesday as Iran launched multiple missile attacks on Israel, raising fears of a wider regional conflict amid growing international concern.
Reports indicated that Iran carried out repeated missile strikes during the day, triggering air raid sirens in several parts of Israel, including Tel Aviv and surrounding regions. Residents were moved to shelters as security forces responded to the attacks.
The United States also issued a deadline to Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz, warning of possible military consequences if navigation through the strategic waterway is disrupted.
Meanwhile, several Gulf countries took precautionary measures in view of the escalating situation. Kuwait announced a night curfew as a safety measure, while traffic movement on the key King Fahd Causeway connecting Saudi Arabia and Bahrain was temporarily suspended.
Iran, however, maintained that it would defend its national interests and warned of reciprocal action if any military steps are taken against it.
At the United Nations, discussions were held on maintaining navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route. A proposed resolution related to the issue did not pass after vetoes by permanent members.
In Lebanon, where hostilities involving Israel and Hezbollah continue, authorities reported significant casualties and displacement of civilians due to ongoing violence.
Global leaders have meanwhile called for restraint and diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation of the conflict and ensure regional stability.
