Russia resumes strikes on Kyiv after brief pause during US peace talks
NEW DELHI: Russia resumed missile and drone attacks on Kyiv on Tuesday after a temporary pause that coincided with the visit of US peace envoys to Russia and Ukraine.
The attacks struck several parts of the Ukrainian capital, damaging residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure. Ukrainian authorities reported deaths and injuries following the overnight strikes.
The temporary halt had been observed while US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff travelled to Moscow and Kyiv for talks aimed at exploring possibilities for ending the conflict.
The resumption of attacks has raised fresh concerns over the prospects for diplomatic progress, even as efforts continue to bring Russia and Ukraine back to negotiations.
Ukrainian officials said several buildings were damaged in the attacks, including residential structures, a school and a clinic. Emergency teams were deployed to affected areas as authorities assessed the damage.
Ukraine has also called on its international partners to strengthen its air-defence capabilities, particularly its ability to intercept ballistic missiles.
The latest strikes came after discussions between the US envoys and Russian and Ukrainian leaders. While the meetings did not produce an immediate breakthrough, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated that the US side presented ideas that could form part of future peace discussions.
The conflict remains unresolved, with the two sides continuing to differ on key territorial and political issues.
The United States has been seeking to revive diplomatic engagement and explore a possible framework for further negotiations.
The latest escalation highlights the difficulty of maintaining a pause in hostilities while diplomatic efforts are under way.
Further discussions involving the United States, Russia and Ukraine are expected as international efforts continue to seek a negotiated solution to the conflict.
