India and Liechtenstein Explore Deeper Cooperation in Trade, Technology and Innovation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held delegation-level talks with Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein in New Delhi on Tuesday, with both sides seeking to strengthen bilateral relations and explore opportunities for greater economic cooperation.

The meeting took place at Hyderabad House during Prince Alois’s state visit to India. The visit is aimed at giving fresh momentum to engagement between the two countries, particularly in trade, investment, innovation and technology.

Earlier, the royal couple, Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie, received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan from President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi. They also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar separately met Prince Alois and highlighted the growing momentum in bilateral ties. He pointed to opportunities arising from the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement between India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

The agreement, which entered into force in 2025, provides a framework for expanding economic engagement between India and EFTA’s member countries, including Liechtenstein. It is intended to facilitate trade and investment and create opportunities for businesses on both sides.

Speaking during the visit, Prince Alois said Liechtenstein attached importance to its relationship with India and saw potential for expanding cooperation in innovation, advanced manufacturing, financial services, education and technology.

The two countries have complementary economic strengths that could support collaboration in specialised industries and services. Greater engagement could also help businesses explore new markets and partnerships under the wider India-EFTA framework.

India and Liechtenstein established diplomatic relations in 1993. The current visit represents an opportunity to review the relationship and identify areas for closer engagement between governments, businesses and institutions.

The visit also includes interactions with senior Indian officials and representatives from the business community. Its outcome will be assessed through follow-up discussions, investment activity and any concrete initiatives announced by the two sides.

The talks reflect India’s continued efforts to broaden economic partnerships with European countries and strengthen links in areas that support trade, innovation and industrial development.
