India and Austria Review Defence, Technology and Economic Cooperation

India and Austria have reviewed their bilateral relationship, including cooperation in defence, security, technology, climate issues and economic development, during talks between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The meeting provided an opportunity to assess progress on understandings and agreements reached during Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker’s visit to India in April.

Jaishankar welcomed the visiting delegation and described relations between the two countries as warm and friendly. He said the ministers would discuss developments in the international situation and explore how India and Austria could contribute to peace and security.

Economic cooperation was another focus of the discussions. Jaishankar said bilateral economic engagement was progressing, while noting that there was further scope to expand it. He also highlighted growing exchanges in science and technology and cooperation on climate-related issues.

The two sides reviewed their strategic and security partnership, including defence cooperation. Their discussions come as both countries seek to strengthen engagement across several areas of mutual interest.

Jaishankar also congratulated Austria on becoming a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. He referred to the countries’ history of cooperation within the United Nations framework and expressed interest in continuing that engagement.

The wider India-European Union relationship also featured in his remarks. Jaishankar said India’s ties with the European Union had intensified and expressed hope for progress on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.

Meinl-Reisinger is visiting India from October 27 to November 2. The visit provides an opportunity for officials to discuss bilateral priorities and review the implementation of previous commitments.

India and Austria have developed cooperation in areas including trade, education, science, technology and industrial development. Strengthening these links could create opportunities for businesses, researchers and institutions in both countries.

The talks also highlighted the importance of continued diplomatic engagement amid changing international conditions. Any further progress will depend on follow-up discussions and the implementation of agreed initiatives.

The meeting reflects the two countries’ interest in maintaining a constructive partnership and expanding cooperation in areas that support economic growth, technological development and international stability.
