India Becomes Associate Observer of Ibero-American Conference, Strengthening Diplomatic Engagement
India has been welcomed as a new Associate Observer of the Ibero-American Conference, marking a development in its diplomatic engagement with countries across Latin America and Europe.
Spain’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, welcomed India, Türkiye, Angola and the Association of Caribbean States as new observers during a high-level dialogue held in Madrid on November 3.
The meeting was organised as part of the 30th Summit of the Ibero-American Conference, hosted by Spain.
The Ibero-American Conference brings together 22 member countries, including 19 nations from Latin America and three European countries — Spain, Portugal and Andorra. The grouping also includes associate and consultative observers.
India’s participation as an Associate Observer provides an opportunity to strengthen dialogue with participating countries and explore areas of mutual interest.
Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita is representing India at the summit during his official visit to Spain from November 3 to 5.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit is expected to provide opportunities for bilateral discussions with participating countries.
The minister is also scheduled to engage with members of the Indian community in Madrid.
India’s observer status comes during the ongoing India-Spain Dual Year of Culture, Tourism and Artificial Intelligence, which aims to expand cooperation between the two countries in cultural exchanges, tourism and emerging technologies.
The conference provides a platform for discussions on international cooperation, development and shared global challenges.
India’s participation is expected to contribute to its engagement with the Ibero-American region and provide further opportunities for diplomatic dialogue.
The development reflects India’s continued efforts to expand its international partnerships and strengthen relations with countries across different regions.
