India Backs Dialogue Amid West Asia Tensions
New Delhi, 2 March: Expressing “deep concern” over the “current situation” in West Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said India supports the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomacy and will work to ensure the safety of Indian citizens in the region.
Speaking after meeting visiting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Modi said, “The current situation in West Asia is a matter of deep concern for us. India supports the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomacy. We will continue to work with all countries to ensure the safety of all Indian citizens present in this region.”
There was no reference in his remarks to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, nor was any condolence expressed.
Modi’s comments came hours after he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu late Sunday night. In a post on X, the Prime Minister said he had discussed the current regional situation and conveyed India’s concerns over recent developments.
“Had a telephone call with PM Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the current regional situation. Conveyed India’s concerns over recent developments and emphasised the safety of civilians as a priority. India reiterates the need for an early cessation of hostilities,” he said.
Earlier on Sunday night, Modi said India strongly condemned the attack on the United Arab Emirates and supported “de-escalation, regional peace, security and stability” following a conversation with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
