India, Russia agree to strengthen strategic partnership in Modi-Putin talks
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to further strengthen the India-Russia strategic partnership during talks in New Delhi on Friday, with discussions covering energy, defence and regional developments.
The meeting took place ahead of the BRICS Summit, which begins in New Delhi on September 12.
The two leaders reviewed cooperation across several areas and exchanged views on international developments, including conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region. The disruptions caused by these conflicts have affected maritime trade and the safety of Indian seafarers.
India reiterated its position that conflicts should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. Modi also indicated India’s readiness to contribute to peace efforts where possible.
Energy cooperation remains an important component of India-Russia relations. India continues to maintain substantial energy ties with Russia, even as New Delhi balances its relations with the United States, Gulf countries and other major international partners.
Defence cooperation was also part of the broader discussions between the two countries. India and Russia have maintained a long-standing defence relationship, while both sides have increasingly explored opportunities for technology cooperation and joint production.
The leaders also discussed efforts to expand bilateral trade. India and Russia have set an objective of increasing annual trade to $100 billion by 2030, compared with nearly $70 billion in 2024-25.
Modi and Putin also visited an India-Russia industrial exhibition showcasing companies and technologies from areas including artificial intelligence, aviation, space, nuclear science, heavy engineering and other sectors.
The latest meeting was the second interaction between the two leaders within two weeks and comes as India prepares to host the BRICS Summit.
The discussions underline the continuing importance of the India-Russia partnership while New Delhi maintains engagement with a wide range of global partners.
Both sides agreed to remain engaged in strengthening their special and privileged strategic partnership amid a changing international environment.
