India, Brazil and South Africa call for comprehensive UN Security Council reform
India, Brazil and South Africa have called for comprehensive reform of the United Nations Security Council during the IBSA Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar participated in the meeting with South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.
The three countries reaffirmed their support for a stronger multilateral system and called for changes to the Security Council to make it more representative of present-day global realities.
The IBSA ministers also discussed the impact of conflicts on developing countries, particularly in areas such as energy and food security. They noted concerns over inflation and economic pressures affecting countries in the Global South.
Digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence were also part of the discussions. The three countries supported wider access to digital connectivity and recognised the potential of artificial intelligence to contribute to economic growth and sustainable development.
The ministers further discussed global economic governance and called for greater participation of developing and emerging economies in international decision-making structures.
Climate action and sustainable development were other areas covered in the joint discussions. The three countries highlighted renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable fuels as important areas for cooperation.
The meeting also reaffirmed the three countries’ opposition to terrorism and included a reference to the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack.
IBSA, comprising India, Brazil and South Africa, provides a platform for the three democracies from Asia, Africa and Latin America to coordinate positions on international issues and strengthen South-South cooperation.
