Canadian Foreign Minister to Visit India for Talks on Trade, Energy and Security Cooperation

NEW DELHI: Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand will visit India and the United Arab Emirates from October 13 to 16 to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in trade, energy, security and other areas, Global Affairs Canada announced on Monday.

During her India visit, Anand is scheduled to meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss priorities under the bilateral roadmap. The discussions are expected to cover trade, energy, people-to-people ties, security and defence cooperation.

The visit comes as India and Canada continue efforts to strengthen diplomatic engagement and broaden economic ties. The two countries have longstanding connections through education, business, investment and a substantial Indian-origin community in Canada.

According to the Canadian government, Anand’s visit will also include participation in the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, where she is expected to join a panel discussion on middle powers and the changing global order.

The Canadian foreign minister is expected to highlight the importance of multilateral and plurilateral cooperation amid geopolitical uncertainty and discuss Canada’s role as a partner in the Indo-Pacific region.

Bilateral trade remains an important part of the relationship. Two-way trade between India and Canada reached 30.4 billion Canadian dollars in 2025, including 11 billion Canadian dollars in goods, according to figures released by the Canadian government.

Energy cooperation, defence and security engagement, and stronger commercial partnerships are among the areas both sides are seeking to develop. People-to-people connections also remain an important feature of the relationship.

Following her engagements in India, Anand will travel to the UAE for meetings with senior leaders and government officials. Discussions there are expected to focus on trade, investment, defence and security, artificial intelligence, innovation and people-to-people ties.

The visit provides an opportunity for India and Canada to review existing cooperation and identify areas for further engagement. The outcome of the ministerial discussions may help shape the next phase of bilateral collaboration across economic and strategic sectors.
