Indian envoy meets Bangladesh PM, discusses bilateral ties

Dhaka: Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma on Monday met Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and conveyed New Delhi’s intent to pursue positive, constructive and people-centric relations based on mutual interests.

According to the Indian High Commission, the meeting focused on strengthening bilateral engagement with emphasis on cooperation in areas aligned with the development priorities of both countries.

The High Commissioner reiterated India’s commitment to work with the government and people of Bangladesh through a forward-looking approach based on mutual interest and mutual benefit.

The meeting assumes significance as it comes after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by Tarique Rahman, formed the government following its victory in the February parliamentary elections, marking a political transition in the country.

Bilateral ties had witnessed some strain during the tenure of the interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus, with both sides now indicating efforts to stabilise relations through continued diplomatic engagement.

Officials said both countries are expected to maintain regular high-level contacts to further strengthen cooperation in areas such as trade, connectivity and regional cooperation.

India and Bangladesh share close historical, cultural and economic ties, with cooperation continuing across multiple sectors.

Further diplomatic engagement between the two countries is expected to continue, according to official sources.
