India Rejects References to Jammu and Kashmir in OIC Resolutions
India on Monday rejected references to the country in resolutions adopted at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Baghdad, Iraq, held on October 17 and 18.
In an official response, the Ministry of External Affairs said the references were biased and politically motivated. India also expressed concern that the organisation was being used to advance Pakistan’s position on issues involving India.
The ministry reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of India and maintained that the OIC has no standing to comment on matters that New Delhi considers internal to the country.
The statement followed the conclusion of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers meeting, which brought together representatives of member states to discuss regional and international issues. The resolutions adopted at the meeting included references to Jammu and Kashmir, prompting India’s response.
India has consistently opposed statements and resolutions by international organisations that address Jammu and Kashmir. New Delhi maintains that issues concerning the Union Territories fall within India’s domestic jurisdiction and has urged other countries to respect its position.
The latest exchange reflects the continuing differences between India and Pakistan over Jammu and Kashmir, an issue that has shaped their bilateral relationship for decades. The two countries maintain differing positions on the territory, and references to it in international forums have frequently prompted diplomatic responses.
The OIC is an intergovernmental organisation comprising member states from across the Muslim world. Its meetings provide a platform for members to discuss political, economic, humanitarian and other issues of shared interest.
India’s response underscores its longstanding diplomatic position on Jammu and Kashmir and its objection to the inclusion of the issue in resolutions by the organisation.
The development comes as India continues to engage with countries and multilateral institutions on a range of regional and global matters. Differences over Jammu and Kashmir remain a recurring point of diplomatic disagreement between New Delhi and Islamabad, as well as a subject of discussion in some international forums.
