Jaishankar Calls for Diplomacy Over Military Solutions at G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called for diplomatic engagement to take priority over military solutions while addressing the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta, the United States.
Speaking at the first plenary session, Jaishankar said that military solutions would not resolve global challenges and that diplomacy must be given an opportunity. His remarks highlighted India’s position on addressing international conflicts through dialogue and cooperation.
The minister also raised concerns about maritime security and the safety of international shipping routes. He stressed the importance of freedom of navigation and called for an end to attacks on seafarers in accordance with international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Disruptions to shipping routes can affect global trade, energy supplies and supply chains. India has consistently emphasised the importance of keeping international maritime routes open and secure, given their role in the movement of essential goods and commercial cargo.
The meeting was hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and brought together foreign ministers from G20 member countries to discuss international developments and shared challenges.
On the sidelines of the gathering, Jaishankar also held bilateral discussions with several counterparts. These included Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, with whom he reviewed the progress of India-Canada cooperation.
He also met foreign ministers from Argentina, Mexico, Brazil and Germany. Such bilateral engagements provide opportunities to review existing partnerships and identify areas for further cooperation.
The G20 provides a platform for major economies to discuss issues affecting international stability, economic growth and global governance. The foreign ministers’ discussions are particularly important at a time when conflicts and geopolitical tensions are affecting trade, energy and security.
India’s position at the meeting focused on dialogue, respect for international law, maritime security and resilient supply chains.
The discussions are expected to contribute to continued engagement among member countries on addressing global challenges through diplomatic channels and multilateral cooperation.
