Qatar Mediates Iran Nuclear Proposal Linking Inspections to Strait of Hormuz Reopening

DOHA: Qatar is mediating a proposal aimed at easing tensions between Iran and the United States by linking renewed international nuclear inspections in Iran with steps to reduce economic and maritime pressure on Tehran.

The proposal seeks to create a diplomatic framework under which the United States would ease its naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz and release some of Iran’s frozen financial assets. In return, Iran would allow International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors to visit nuclear facilities affected by earlier attacks.

The plan also includes a possible arrangement for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway through which a substantial share of global energy shipments passes.

Under the proposal, the strait could reopen along a route agreed upon with Oman and submitted to the International Maritime Organization. The arrangement is intended to reduce risks to commercial shipping and improve regional stability.

Iran has reportedly sought additional conditions, including sanctions relief, an end to the conflict in Lebanon and changes to the US military presence near its coastline.

The negotiations remain difficult, with significant differences between Washington and Tehran over nuclear activities, security guarantees and the broader regional conflict.

Oman is also involved in discussions concerning the administration of the maritime route. The proposal reflects continuing efforts by Gulf countries to prevent further escalation and support diplomatic engagement.

The Strait of Hormuz has become a central issue in the confrontation because of its importance to international energy supplies. Disruptions to shipping through the waterway can affect oil and gas markets and increase concerns among countries dependent on Gulf energy exports.

Diplomatic efforts are continuing as mediators seek to establish conditions for negotiations and reduce the risk of further military confrontation.

The proposal has not yet resulted in a final agreement. Its progress will depend on whether Iran and the United States can bridge their differences and accept the proposed measures.
